Whisk & Bloom

On a quiet street in Highland, Michigan, nestled beneath the trees and just off a neighborhood driveway, you'll find Whisk & Bloom—a bright white roadside stand with clean lines, a sleek metal roof, and a peaceful energy that matches the baked goods inside. Created by Julie Palmer, this little structure is more than just a place to grab a loaf of sourdough. “It’s just called Whisk & Bloom,” Julie says. “Simple, intentional, and rooted in the idea of slowing down and savoring.” Every Friday from spring through fall, the stand is stocked by mid-morning with fresh-baked bread and goodies, with occasional surprise extras or pre-order options extending into the winter.

“It all began with sourdough,” Julie says. “I started baking it for my own health, realizing how much better I felt eating naturally fermented bread compared to store-bought loaves filled with preservatives.” What began as a personal pursuit quickly turned into a community bakery rooted in care and connection. These days, she offers sourdough boules and sandwich loaves, pretzels, bagels, muffins, and cookies—rotating with the seasons. “S’mores cookies are coming back soon for summer!” she adds. With a small cash box and Venmo QR code tucked neatly inside, payment works on the honor system. “I chose this setup because I want to trust the people around me, and so far, that trust has been well-placed.”

Julie keeps it simple: no elaborate signage, no loud branding. Just a quiet moment of joy. “The quiet joy of seeing people walk up, peek in, and smile—it’s like a little act of connection without even needing to talk.” Some people round up their payment, others leave kind notes, and every reaction counts. “One moment that stuck with me was watching someone pick up their order, take in the smell of the bread, and you could see it hit them… like it brought back something familiar and comforting.” Orders for Friday pickups are due by Wednesday at 9 p.m., and can be placed through Julie’s link: https://app.simply-bread.co/whiskbloombakery. Pretzel and bagel Tuesdays happen every other week, too. Stop by. Slow down. Savor something good.
